Free Lesson Plan For Flipping Your Classroom

Flipping the classroom can sound daunting. Providing extra content to studentsand then not having that content to present in classcan feel like a lot of extra work for even the most experienced educator. Whether you’re new to the flipped classroom model or a savvy veteran, you’ll need a lesson plan that incorporates the principles of a flipped classroom in a way that enhances student learning.

We’ve built a lesson plan for young string players to do exactly that.

Free Lesson Plan for Flipping Your Classroom

Even if you aren’t teaching beginning strings, this plan offers an example of how you can:

  • Leverage existing resources (in this case, from Jazz at Lincoln Center) to flip your classroom.
  • Integrate out of class content with in-class activities to keep students engaged.
  • Utilize the flipped classroom model to provide students with the historical context for the repertoire they perform in class.
  • Use SmartMusic to learn new music.
  • Access the benefits of flipping the classroom even with an ensemble.

If you do teach beginning strings, you’ll also get a lesson plan to introduce jazz to your students by encouraging improvisation and exploring the historical and cultural context of traditional New Orleans jazz.

All the materials in the plan, such as the videos from Jazz at Lincoln Center, are free to use. That includes the arrangement of When the Saints Go Marching In referenced in the lesson plan, which is available in the free version of SmartMusic.
