Music Ed Mentor Podcast #014: New Year’s Resolutions

Making New Year’s resolutions is easy. Keeping them is hard. One key is to choose resolutions that make a tangible difference in your life. Resolutions are about more than “setting goals,” they’re about becoming a better person.

As regular listeners know, I’m a little obsessed with helping music educators have the best lifestyle they can. I want you to be healthy in all the ways that matter – physically, mentally, spiritually, financially, and socially. Making the right resolutions can go a long way toward being happy and healthy. In this episode of the podcast, I offer seven resolutions that will help you live a better life in the next year.

You don’t have to do all seven of these. Choose one and commit to it! If it’s hard, if you fall short, that’s ok – simply recommit and keep going!

Three Key Takeaways

“Always be positive.”

Make “always be positive” your mantra. Decide, right now, that you will be positive. Staying positive will keep you above the fray with parents, students, or administrators. Staying positive is a self-fulfilling prophecy. When you stay positive in one difficult situation, you can take that sense of confidence and self-control into future situations.

“Weight loss goals are completely bunk.”

Weight loss goals assign a number to health – and if you don’t hit the number, you’ll feel frustrated. Worse, you can become so focused on the scale that you don’t consider the changes necessary to keep weight off. Instead of making a weight loss goal this year, focus on a lifestyle change. Make the resolution to improve your health. Embrace small changes – that are reasonable and sustainable –  that will improve your health in the long term.

“Play hard!”

Whatever “play” means for you, do it! Whether it’s hiking, reading, painting, or something else, devote at least three hours a week to play. Show yourself that you can live the life you have and love it! You have the time to nurture yourself, and playing is an important way you can do that.
