This week we’re featuring Doug Spata’s Gauntlet, a grade 2 piece with a bold, contemporary sound not often found in music at this level. Created to reinforce B-flats, this piece highlights every section of the orchestra, in an inspiring cinematic setting with dark harmonies and intense rhythms. It’s a dramatic, moving piece certain to be a favorite with both your students and audiences.

Though the title suggests a medieval battle or a test of skill, Mr. Spata reports that the piece was written without a specific story or imagery in mind. Audiences and musicians enjoy interpreting the dramatic themes and transformations in many different ways.
