While it’s easy to focus on the benefits of SmartMusic’s many technical innovations, the continual expansion of the SmartMusic repertoire library is no less remarkable. I’m very excited about the latest additions which have been the subject of many educator requests.
SmartMusic 2011 now includes repertoire created specifically for the snare drum, in the form of three method books. In the words of MakeMusic CEO Ron Raup, “These drum methods fill a significant gap in our SmartMusic repertoire and provide educators with more resources to teach their percussionists.” What’s more, each method includes audio recordings of professional musicians for all music.
Alfred’s Drum Method, Book 1 is a very well-known snare drum method book used by both private and public school teachers. I find it logical and sequential in its presentation. Emphasis is placed on developing a secure rhythmic foundation as well as musical and technical skills. This book can be used as a stand-alone method as well as a supplement to classroom material, and while the title indicates “Book 1,” it can be used for many purposes in a high school setting, too.
One of the highlights? Students can play snare drum parts for five Sousa marches along with full band accompaniment!
I can’t wait for the trio! Bring on the piccolos!
Rudimental Etudes for Snare Drum, Easy and Rudimental Etudes for Snare Drum, Intermediate, can help your students achieve a higher skill level in rudimental drum performance. These studies are based on the Percussive Arts Society International Drum Rudiments. Each book contains 40 rudiment-based etudes. Now students and teachers have easy access to this very important aspect of percussion performance – along with all the benefits of SmartMusic.
Choose from forty etudes based on specific rudiments
From my 30-year perspective as a band director and professional percussionist, I believe that Alfred’s Drum Method and the Rudimental Etudes are wonderful resources for teachers and students alike. Among the many benefits SmartMusic adds is the ability to hear the correct interpretation, which is invaluable.
