SmartMusic Feature Friday: Export and Import a Playlist

Export_Import

This week’s SmartMusic Feature Friday shows you how to export and import a playlist you have created. If you would like to read an article on how to create a playlist, click here. A playlist allows you to group different types of repertoire together in one place for easy access. SmartMusic playlists can be exported from one computer and imported onto another that has SmartMusic installed. All the repertoire in the playlist will automatically open or download to your computer. The only exceptions are MP3 files and Finale created SmartMusic files (SMP). Those types of files need to be on the computer to which the playlist is being imported.

Why would you want to export a playlist? Here is one possible scenario:

  • Create a playlist of repertoire in SmartMusic to help teach a particular concept; for example, triple meter.
  • Send the playlist to students.
  • After importing, the repertoire in the playlist automatically opens or downloads to the computer. The students don’t need to search for the repertoire individually, saving time (more time for practicing!).

Here is another example:

  • Download some concert repertoire at school on your desktop that you want to listen to later.
  • Create a playlist of those pieces.
  • Export the playlist and you will be able to import all the pieces on your home computer automatically so you don’t have to manually look for each piece again.

So how do you export a playlist?

  •  Select a playlist that you have  created and right-click on the title. (You may have to control click on a one button mouse.)
  • Select Export Playlist.

  • Save the playlist to your selected destination.
  • Notice that the extension for the playlist is .plst
  • The playlist file is a digital file and can be emailed, put on a flash drive, etc.

  • Navigate to the playlist file and click Open.
  • The playlist now appears under Playlist in the left navigation panel.
  • Double-click on the title. SmartMusic will open repertoire from the playlist that is on the computer and download repertoire that is not.

Playlists can be very useful and are easy to share using the Export and Import features.
